New Squirrel In Town

There's a new guy at the feeder, and he's a little shy. I eyeballed him for the first time a few days after we got home from Montana, and I hoped I would see him again & on a regular basis. Today he finally reappeared, and I was soooo happy to see him!

He climbed up the bird feeder and settled in to fill his belly. The birds were a little put off about this new arrangement, but I just let him be up there.

What in the world could make a little squirrel so special as to be allowed to consume as much bird seed as he wants?

Well, this little fella is obviously blind in one eye, so he's at quite a disadvantage.

I'm thrilled he's still alive---he must be smart & cunning.

Look closely at the very first photo, and you will see he's also missing a nice little chunk out of his ear. I don't know what happened to him, but my first guess would be a fight with another squirrel over a female during mating season. Squirrels can be quite vicious.

There used to be a young squirrel in the yard I called Baby Groot (Jamie called him Little Devil). He hasn't been seen in a while, and I couldn't say with certainty that this isn't him. Baby Groot had an odd little kink to his tail, and I see this guy also has something a little odd about his tail.

Patches O'Houlihan is what we're calling him.

I stepped outside to try to get better photos of him, and he immediately made for the tree. He watched me for a minute though, so I hope he'll feel safe enough to come back. See ya later, Patches!
